Charles James “Chuck” Fonzone, 82, of South Whitehall passed away on Monday, February 13, 2023. A lifelong Lehigh Valley Resident, born in Whitehall, Chuck attended Allentown Central Catholic where he was class president and captain of the football team. Chuck graduated from Lehigh University in 1962 where he earned his B.A. in English. He went on to teach English at Easton Junior High School.In 1965, Chuck Fonzone joined the Marine Corps and moved up the ranks to become an artillery officer. Serving in combat zones in Vietnam, Chuck was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in battle. Returning to the Lehigh Valley, Chuck resumed teaching in 1969 when he enrolled in Duquesne Law School in Pittsburgh, PA where he met his wife of 50 years, Mary Anne (Fifick).Attorney Fonzone returned to Lehigh Valley once again where he would go on to practice law for nearly 50 years. He began as a public defender at Walker, Thomas, Karess, Fonzone, and Ashley. He then moved on to start his own firm, Fonzone, and Ashley before joining Gross McGinley, LLP where he retired in 2018 as a partner. Attorney Fonzone had a diverse range of practice areas and was active in the Bar and community, and served as Commander of the Honorary First Defenders in 1990.A lifelong colleague and friend of Malcolm Gross, Founding Partner of Gross McGinley, LLP, Chuck loved practicing law and serving the community in which he was born and raised. He served as solicitor to numerous Lehigh Valley municipalities and the Lehigh Northampton Airport Authority. He enjoyed a very distinguished legal career and was a dedicated husband, a loving father, and a good friend.
